Putting in a new tile shower is one of the most expensive parts of a bathroom remodel. Looked at another way, labor can cost about 50% of the entire budget, so that’s pretty expensive too. In this article, we’re going to break it down further so you know what to expect when budgeting for a bathroom remodel.

If it’s time to upgrade your bathroom, it can be really fun to dream about what you might want it to look like. Working within a budget can be easier when you have an idea of the most expensive parts.

Tile Shower

Custom tile shower with frameless glass door is an expensive part of a bathroom remodel.

Upgrading from an acrylic alcove shower to tile is one of the most expensive parts of a bathroom remodel. That’s because putting in a tile shower is a custom project. Even if you go off of a common design, the measurements still have to be customized to fit your bathroom.

A prefab shower could be a single unit, or it could be made of a few major pieces. It has all the ledges and niches built-in at the factory. Unfortunately, there’s no prefab version of a tile shower. Instead of setting just a few large pieces, your contractor has to set hundreds of tiles.

When you put in a tile shower, your contractor and their team have to measure the space, design the shower, build the structural frame, lay down waterproof materials, and tile the shower by hand. Finally, the glass door will be cut to your shower size at the factory and sent as a custom piece. Frameless doors will cost a little more than framed glass doors, but not by a whole lot.

In general, the more angles you put into a shower design, the higher your cost will be. For example ledges, nooks, and benches increase the number of angles and the surface area that needs to be tiled. Workers need to cut tiles with precision to cover all of the small spaces.

It takes many hours of labor to install a custom tile shower ? which is why it can carry a hefty price tag. At the end of the day, atile shower can be worth it for the elegance that it brings to the bathroom.

Tile Floor

Tile, in general, is an expensive part of a bathroom remodel. Other materials can go down in hours, but tile usually takes days. Things can get even more expensive if you’re using really small tiles. Tessellated hexagon tiles can look pleasing to the eye, but someone has to lay each one of those individually. They need to space them out correctly and make sure that they are all level.

Besides the labor costs going into tile installation, the materials themselves can get very expensive. Entry-level tile installation will cost more than vinyl plank, wood plank, or linoleum. As you get into more expensive materials like marble, a new bathroom floor could cost up to $3,500 ? without even getting into luxury territory.

Labor Costs

The National Kitchen and Bath Association recommends you budget at least 20% for installation costs, while HomeAdvisor says labor can be up to 65% of the total cost. Labor costs can of course range depending on the area where you live, but it’s not uncommon for you to spend half of your budget on labor. That makes labor another very expensive part of a bathroom remodel.

For a midsize project, you’ll probably need a general contractor, a plumber, an electrician, and maybe another worker for drywall installation. These costs can add up, especially if it’s up to them to buy all of the materials ? when a worker goes to the local home improvement store, they get paid for that time.

It seems counterintuitive, but labor can take up a larger portion of the budget for a bathroom remodel that uses cheaper materials. Think about it this way. The contractor still has to work the same amount of hours and cover the same area whether you’re paying $1 per tile or $10 (all else being equal).

One thing that will make your labor cost skyrocket is if you want to move any of the fixtures in your bathroom. It takes a lot of work to move plumbing around, and you might find new issues by opening up the walls. If you want to move your fixtures, you should definitely plan some budget wiggle room.

Saving On Labor Costs

In general, you can save some money on labor costs by doing some things yourself. For example, offer to pick up all your fixtures and finish materials from your local home improvement store.

Also, you could do the painting yourself to save some money. If you want to do anything else, make sure you have the experience. Tile work isn’t easy ? if you mess it up, you’d have to live with crooked tiles or tear them up and start over. The same goes for anything that requires creating a straight and level surface like making the shower frame. Plumbing and electrical work definitely require experience as well.
